On Saturday, the Egyptian Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade announced its intention to establish giant strategic silos for staples, including wheat, in seven governorates, at a cost of EGP 21 billion ($ 1.3 billion).
In a statement, The Minister of Supply, Ali Al-Muselhi, said that these silos could enhance Egypt's stocks of staples such as meat, poultry, and wheat to be sufficient for eight to nine months.
He added that the ministry is working to implement the instructions of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to increase the strategic stocks.
El-Sisi urged concerned authorities to increase the stocks of staples in Egypt, the largest importer of wheat in the world, especially in light of the outbreak of the new coronavirus.
On Friday, the Egyptian Health Ministry reported 171 new coronavirus cases, all of them are Egyptians, upping the total number of confirmed cases to 2,844.
“9 more deaths were confirmed; raising the total number to 205,” Khaled Megahed, the ministry’s spokesman, said in a statement.
“Up to 646 coronavirus patients have recovered so far,” the spokesman said.
“As many as 50 Egyptians were among the recovered patients today,” he added.
Also, the number of coronavirus patients who had now been retested for the virus and had received negative results has reached 891, after getting proper treatment in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Egyptian government took gradual measures to curb the spread of the virus, including the closure of schools and universities and preventing crowds, according to WHO representative.
In Egypt, 85% of the positive cases had recovered without treatment because their symptoms were simple, he said.
"The death rate in Egypt reaches 7.6% and 13% of the confirmed cases are from the medical staff," he added.
