Egypt's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has confirmed that the country is planning to build the largest astronomical telescope in the Middle East.

The ministry added, in a statement, that the new telescope will replace the Kattameya Observatory, which was established since the 50s and participated in international astronomical discoveries, including the landing of the first human on the moon in 1969.

Yesterday, Gad Al-Qadi, head of the National Institute for Astronomical Research, inaugurated the activities of the Pan-African and Middle East Astronomical School, on the use of data from many galaxies to understand the mysteries of the universe, during the period from 17 to 23 February.

The ministry stated that these scientific efforts serve Egypt's preparations to build the largest astronomical telescope as a substitute for the Kattameya Astronomical Observatory, which is the only one in the Middle East and the second in Africa with a mirror diameter of 74 inches.
