The Egyptian National Railways has started the experimental operation of air-conditioned Spanish trains made by the Talgo company. The operation has ben carried out on the Cairo-Alexandria and Cairo-Aswan rail lines without any passengers.

The move comes as part of a broader plan to upgrade railway infrastructure, including carriages and personnel, to ensure better services to customers.

Five air-conditioned first-class railcars, eight air-conditioned second-class railcars, a caboose, engine, and a power vehicle make up the new train. It is the first of seven trains to be delivered to Egypt as part of a contract with the Spanish Talgo firm.

The new trains, which cost €125.6 million, are built of aluminium, which helps to lower the train's weight and fuel usage throughout the journey. It's also rust-resistant, which means it won't corrode from the water used to clean the trains, extending their lifespan.

In addition to the existence of central displays in the second-class air-conditioned carriages, each seat in the first air-conditioned carriages is fitted with a display screen to display information for people with special requirements. For further protection, the carriages are equipped with video cameras.

Egypt has been working with multinational corporations to modernise its rail industry in recent years, and has signed agreements to purchase hundreds of railcars.

Thales, a French corporation, stated on Tuesday that it has delivered three critical stations for the ENR: Tanta, Sedfa, and Al-Ousayrat, which are all part of the rail line from Alexandria in northern Egypt to Aswan in Upper Egypt via Cairo.

Sedfa and Al-Ousayrat stations were built to connect Assiut and Qena's Nagaa Hammadi, whereas Tanta station is on the Cairo-Alexandria railway.
