Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met in Cairo on Saturday, underscoring their shared commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation between Egypt and Russia, according to a statement from the Egyptian Presidency.
During the meeting, al-Sisi expressed appreciation for the steady growth of bilateral relations, particularly in the political, economic, and commercial spheres. He emphasized the importance of moving forward with major joint projects, including the establishment of the Russian industrial zone within the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the Dabaa nuclear power plant.
In turn, Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to building on the understandings reached during al-Sisi’s visit to Russia in May, with the aim of expanding prospects for cooperation across various fields, the statement said.
The talks also addressed the Second Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, held earlier Saturday in Cairo. Both sides described the conference as a key platform for enhancing partnership and boosting economic cooperation between Russia and African countries.
Moreover, the two officials reviewed a range of regional and international issues of mutual concern, including developments in Gaza, Sudan, and Libya. They stressed the urgent need to end the war in Gaza, consolidate the ceasefire, and prevent further escalation in the region.
Lavrov praised Egypt’s role in promoting regional stability, according to the statement.
Discussions also touched on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with al-Sisi reiterating Egypt’s support for political solutions to international crises, the statement added.
