The area of Al-Hussain Mosque, located in Old Islamic Cairo, has witnessed some restoration works, as part of a project launched by the Egyptian government, in cooperation with UNESCO to preserve and restore the historical venue.

The area of the Al-Hussain mosque is part of Phase 1 of the project, where people can see that a number of bazaars and ancient buildings beside the mosque are being renovated and rehabilitated.

The restoration of the Al-Hussain Mosque is part of a thorough plan by the government to develop Old Cairo, according to Egypt's government.

As per media reports, the plan to renovate the ancient iconic mosque includes its facade, courtyard, interior area, dilapidated walls, ablution places for men and women, and ceilings, as well as the expansion of the prayer areas.

In addition to being a place of prayer and worship, the mosque is a cultural and scientific beacon for the people of Cairo.

The mosque that dates back to the year 1154 is considered one of the oldest heritage mosques in the region. Its historical importance is mainly due to the fact that it is one of the oldest Fatamied mosques in the region, and it's believed that it features the coffin and the head of Emam Al-Hussain, according to historians.
