Egypt, Portugal stress need to stop Israeli movements to invade Rafah

Today, Saturday, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with João Cravinho, Portuguese Foreign Minister, on the sidelines of the 60th session of the Munich Security Conference.

The talks dealt with the overall distinguished bilateral relations between Egypt and Portugal, and ways to advance them, especially in light of the momentum witnessed in Egyptian-European relations, as the Portuguese minister affirmed his country’s full support for the path towards enhancing relations between Egypt and the European Union to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership, in a way that pushes the level of bilateral cooperation to broader horizons, According to the statements of Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, the foreign ministry spokesperson. 

The talks also focused on the developments in the situation in the Gaza Strip, as the Portuguese minister affirmed his country’s support for the important role played by Egypt and its tireless efforts to contain the crisis in the Strip, stressing during his contacts with his European counterparts the importance of adopting a unified European position demanding an immediate ceasefire, and the launch of a serious political process for a comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue on the basis of the two-state solution. 

The official spokesman added that the two ministers stressed during the meeting the necessity of launching immediate and effective international action to stop the Israeli moves to invade the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip and prevent the region from sliding into a wider conflict.
