Egypt Marks World Migratory Bird Day

Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad celebrated Tuesday, World Migratory Bird Day, in Ashtoum el-Gamil Reserve and Tnis Island in Port Said governorate.

The idea behind the celebration was to raise awareness of the importance of birds and to increase opportunities for bird-watching tourism, as well as to clarify their importance as one of the most important components of the unique biological diversity, according to the Ministry of Environment.

Yasmine said that World Migratory Bird Day is a real opportunity to raise awareness of ways of harmony and coexistence with nature and enjoy its natural wealth of rare and migratory birds without harming them.

The reserve was proclaimed as a natural reserve in 1988, on an area of 180 km2, and it is regarded as one of the wetland reserves that serve as a natural isolation for birds, at a distance of 200 km from the heart of Cairo. And the phenomenon of "Bird Migration is the regular seasonal movement, often north and south, along a flyway, between breeding and wintering grounds.

Therefore, it is considered one of the most preferred and most visited reserves in Egypt. The protectorate also contains different species of plants such as leaf rode, hibiscus, and more which are used in treating several diseases. In addition, it is home to 118 birds, including Little Gulls, flamingoes, and others.

It’s worth mentioning that the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) stated that the theme of World Migratory Bird Day 2023 will focus on ‘Water and its importance for migratory birds.
