Egypt recorded a notable improvement in its standing on the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), transitioning from a “medium” to a “low” terrorism impact category in 2026, according to the latest report issued by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

The report ranks Egypt 32nd globally in 2026, compared to 29th place in 2025, reflecting a gradual decline in terrorism-related activity and its overall impact.

The GTI evaluates 163 countries based on four key indicators: the number of terrorist incidents, the number of deaths caused by terrorist groups, the number of injuries resulting from such incidents, and the number of hostages taken within a given year. This framework provides a comprehensive assessment of the level of terrorist threat in each country.

The shift in Egypt’s classification suggests measurable progress in reducing both the frequency and severity of terrorist incidents. Analysts attribute this improvement to a combination of tightened security measures, enhanced law enforcement capabilities, and preventive strategies aimed at countering extremism.

Despite the positive trajectory, the report notes that regional challenges persist, particularly amid ongoing instability in parts of the Middle East, requiring continued vigilance and security coordination.

The latest ranking reinforces Egypt’s efforts to stabilize its internal security environment, which in turn supports a more favorable climate for investment and tourism, while strengthening international confidence in the country’s path toward sustainable stability.
