President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt has unveiled a range of measures aimed at easing financial pressures on citizens, including an increase in the minimum wage for public sector workers and adjustments to income tax exemptions.

Under the new provisions, the minimum wage for public sector employees will rise from EGP 3,500 to EGP 4,000. Additionally, a special cost of living allowance of EGP 600 will be granted to employees across various sectors, including the state administrative apparatus, economic entities, state-owned enterprises, and the public sector.

Income tax exemptions have also been revised, with the annual threshold expanding by 25 percent, from EGP 36,000 to EGP 45,000, for all state workers.

These measures were announced during the inauguration of development projects in the Beni Suef governorate as part of the Decent Life initiative.

Furthermore, President El-Sisi has increased Takaful and Karama benefits by 15 percent for five million households, while doubling the exceptional grant to EGP 600 for 11 million pensioners and beneficiaries, up from EGP 300.

The minimum wage for government employees had previously been raised in March 2023, from EGP 3,000 to EGP 3,500.

President El-Sisi has also directed an increase in technology allowances for registered journalists and called for assistance to small farmers and individuals who have struggled with loan interest payments prior to January 1, 2022. Moreover, individuals who acquired land from the General Authority for Urban and Rural Development Projects and have faced challenges in paying interest and late penalty fees will be exempted, with a deadline set by the end of 2024.
