The Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture said that the authorities have purchased one million tons of local wheat for farmers so far.

El Sayed el Quseir, Minister of Agriculture said on Sunday that the total harvest of wheat in the country has harvested 1.2 million feddans so far, adding that "about one million tons have been supplied to the Ministry of Supply."

The minister praised the efforts of Egyptian farmers, stressing that "wheat productivity this year is promising as a result of adherence to the technical recommendations that the ministry issued periodically, in addition to the field presence with farmers to solve the problems they face on the ground."

Egypt, the largest importer of wheat in the world, is seeking to increase its domestic production in an attempt to reduce imports. The government and private sector traders import about 10 million tons annually, according to official statistics.
