Egypt, Greece, Cyprus to Ink Electricity Interconnection Pact

Cyprus Ambassador to Cairo Homer Mavrommatis revealed that Egypt, Greece, Cyprus will ink a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday to promote the electrical interconnection of the three Mediterranean countries and ensure energy supply for Southern Europe.

In a statement, the Ambassador indicated that the three countries will ink a pact and also hold meetings on the sidelines of their upcoming summit, which will take place in Greece on Oct. 19.

"This pact will be critical to furthering our common purpose," Mavrommatis noted.

The MoU will provide for the timely granting of permits for the technical studies and laying of the undersea interconnector cable.

At those meetings, there would be discussions of the current situation and upcoming prospects of the world electricity market, global energy security, and macroeconomic aspects.

Commenting on the previous agreements that have been reached concerning the tripartite summit, he said that his country had made every effort it could to resume its cooperation with almost all countries in the eastern Mediterranean and beyond, such as Egypt, and other Arab and Middle east countries.
