Egypt fought off Cameroon in a great 2-1 victory at the under 23 African Cup of Nations Thursday, putting their Tokyo 2020 Olympic dream qualification one step closer. Mustafa Mohamed scored Egypt's goal to lead the top scorers in the tournament with 4 goals and gave the Pharaohs a vital victory.
Egypt lifted their point tally to 9 topping group A, while Cameroon froze at only 4 points in third place as a result of a goal difference after Ghana beat Mali (2-0) to raise the tally to 4 points and occupy the second place, and Mali remained pointless.
The sniper Mustafa Mohamed managed to score the first goal for the Egyptian team in the 27th minute after a cross from Karim Iraqi found it's way into the right foot of the Zamalek forward, who blasted it into goal.
Cameroon scored the equalizing goal in the 37th minute after a corner confused the Egyptian defense with Ayoke scoring the equalizer.
In the 51st minute, Mustafa Mohamed returned give Egypt the lead again after a corner that was executed shortly before Imam Ashour converted into a fine cross to meet the Egyptian striker with a wonderful header into the net.
In the 62nd minute, Cameroon almost drew again after a direct free kick by Ivina with a rocket shot from the right post before the defense scattered.
In the 78th minute, Ramadan Subhi made a great sprint from the midfield but the Cameroonian defense followed him, forcing the Egyptian captain to dribble past them before wasting the shot.
Ahmed Ramadan tried to add a third goal in the 90th minute with a shot from outside the penalty area but the ball hit his team mate and deflected outside.
