Egypt was elected to chair the 15th session of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (UN PBC), succeeding Canada, according to the Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

"The move comes after the UN African group chose Egypt to represent Africa in this important position, and after its re-election as member of the UN Peacebuilding Commission with high votes in December 2020," the Foreign Ministry said in its statement.

Egypt’s permanent representative to UN Mohamed Idris said: "Egypt’s election for chairing the UN Peacebuilding Commission for the first time culminates the efforts of the Egyptian diplomacy, which supported the commission since its inception in 2005."

"The UN Peacebuilding Commission’s meeting shed light on the priorities of Egypt’s presidency to the commission," Idris said, adding the member states have praised Cairo’s leading role in building the peace.
