Egypt, on Thursday, August 8, condemned the recent statements made by the Israeli Finance Minister, in which he claimed there was a moral justification for starving Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt considered these disgraceful remarks to be unacceptable in both form and substance, stating that they constitute a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the four Geneva Conventions, which obligate Israel, as the occupying power, to ensure the safety and essential living conditions for the Palestinian people under occupation.

Egypt also viewed these irresponsible statements as an unacceptable incitement against the residents of Gaza and a further evasion of the temporary measures that the International Court of Justice has demanded Israel implement.

Egypt reminded all members of the international community that the essence of international humanitarian law has been shaped and developed over the past decades to combat and prevent such practices that are contrary to human dignity.

Egypt called for an effective international effort to put an end to the tragedies faced by civilians in Gaza and to ensure the preservation of the minimum legal and ethical standards in times of war.
