Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan said his side did not deserve to lose after a dramatic 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
"The result was unfair. Egypt did not deserve to lose today against Argentina," Hassan told reporters after the match.
He argued that Argentina's winning goal should not have stood, saying Egypt should have been awarded a penalty before the decisive goal after Hamdy Fathy was fouled inside the penalty area. Hassan said the referee should have reviewed the incident using VAR and described the officiating as unfair to Egypt.
Despite the defeat, Hassan praised his players' performances throughout the tournament, saying he was fully satisfied with the team's display and proud of what they had achieved.
He also apologised to the Egyptian people for the team's exit, saying the squad had hoped to go further in the competition and was never afraid of facing any opponent.
