Ecuador declared a nationwide public holiday on Friday after the national team secured a historic place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a memorable victory over Germany.
President Daniel Noboa announced the decision on social media, praising the players and coaching staff for overcoming criticism and difficult circumstances to deliver a moment of national pride. "Thank you to the players and the coach.
Despite the criticism, insults and challenges, you overcame every obstacle and gave the Ecuadorian people a great joy. Tomorrow is a holiday," Noboa wrote.
The celebration followed Ecuador's dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Germany in the final Group E match.
After conceding an early goal, Ecuador rallied to claim all three points and secure qualification for the Round of 32 as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.
The achievement marks Ecuador's second appearance in the World Cup knockout stage, following its historic run at the 2006 tournament.
Germany still finished top of the group despite the defeat, while Côte d'Ivoire advanced as runners-up after defeating Curaçao.
