Canadian aviation authorities prevented an intoxicated pilot from operating an Air India flight after two breathalyser tests returned positive results at Vancouver International Airport, according to a source cited by Reuters.

The source said Canada’s transport regulator instructed Air India to investigate the incident after airport police conducted the alcohol tests and ordered the pilot to leave the aircraft. The tests were carried out shortly before departure at Vancouver International Airport.

Canadian transport authorities reportedly described the case as a serious matter in formal correspondence with the airline, warning that legal action could follow.

The source spoke on condition of anonymity, citing a lack of authorization to speak publicly. Canada’s transport regulator did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside normal working hours.

Air India confirmed in a statement that the flight from Vancouver to Delhi on 23 December was delayed at the last minute due to the incident. The airline said a replacement pilot was immediately assigned to operate the flight.

The airline added that the pilot involved has been suspended from flying duties pending the outcome of the investigation, stressing that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward any breach of aviation safety rules.

Air India said that if violations are confirmed, strict disciplinary action will be taken in line with company policy, underscoring its commitment to passenger safety and regulatory compliance.
