Fuel storage facilities at Port of Salalah were struck by a drone on Tuesday after several unmanned aerial vehicles targeted the strategic maritime hub in southern Oman, according to an official security source.
The source, cited by the Oman News Agency, confirmed that multiple drones were intercepted, while one drone managed to hit fuel storage tanks at the port, sparking a fire at the facility. Authorities reported no casualties or injuries as a result of the incident.
Videos circulated on social media appeared to show flames and smoke rising from the fuel storage area following the strike. Emergency teams were dispatched to contain the blaze and secure the surrounding facilities.
Officials said that relevant security and emergency agencies are continuing surveillance and defensive operations to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents, workers, and port infrastructure.
The strike comes only days after a similar incident at Port of Duqm, where another drone attack targeted fuel storage tanks at the commercial port.
Authorities confirmed that one fuel tank was hit during the Duqm attack, but the damage was contained quickly and no human casualties were reported.
The Omani government condemned the attacks and said it is taking all necessary measures to respond to the incidents and safeguard national infrastructure.
The security escalation has also begun affecting energy trade. According to industry sources cited by Reuters, OQ Trading declared force majeure on liquefied natural gas shipments supplied under a long-term contract to Petrobangla.
Under the revised arrangement, Petrobangla is expected to receive only one LNG cargo per month, instead of the larger volumes originally agreed upon in the contract.
The attacks come amid an unprecedented escalation in regional tensions following a series of military strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran since February 28.
The strikes, carried out in response to Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities, have dramatically intensified geopolitical instability in the Gulf region. Reports indicate that the campaign resulted in the death of Ali Khamenei, along with several senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Security incidents targeting major Gulf ports and energy infrastructure have raised concerns about the safety of shipping lanes and energy exports in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
Ports such as Salalah and Duqm play an important role in fuel storage, logistics, and international shipping, meaning any disruption could have ripple effects on global energy markets and maritime trade.
