The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Army announced it had successfully thwarted a failed coup attempt, according to local news agency "L'actualité."
The army's statement confirmed that the coup plot, aimed at seizing power by force, was foiled and all conspirators were apprehended.
Local media reported that three people were killed during an armed clash between men in military uniforms and the guards of a prominent politician near the president's office in the capital, Kinshasa.
Michel Moto Muhima, spokesperson for former Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Vital Kamerhe, stated that armed men attacked Kamerhe’s residence in Kinshasa, but his guards repelled the attackers.
Local media identified the assailants as Congolese soldiers. It remains unclear if they intended to arrest Kamerhe, who is a candidate for President of the National Assembly in the upcoming elections, which were postponed due to internal disputes within the ruling party.
Reports indicate that two police officers and one of the attackers were killed in the exchange of gunfire that erupted around 4:30 AM at Kamerhe's home on Tshashi Street, nearly 1.2 miles from the presidential palace.
