More than 70 people were killed in the collapse of a gold mine at an exploration site in western Mali.
Omar Sidibe, one of the official gold prospectors in Kangaba, said, “It started with a noise. The ground started shaking. There were more than 200 gold prospectors at the site. The search has now ended and we have found 73 bodies.”
The Ministry of Mines in Mali stated in a statement that a number of miners were killed, without giving accurate numbers. The government offered its "deep condolences to the bereaved families and the Malian people."
Gold mining sites regularly experience deadly collapses as the activity is dangerous and authorities seek to control artisanal exploitation of the mineral.
