Denmark is not sending an official diplomatic delegation to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics over human rights issues, officials announced on Friday.

Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod said: "It is no secret that we from the Danish side are very concerned about the human rights situation in China."

"The government has decided that we will not attend the Winter Olympics in China," Kofod added.

The decision comes after EU countries failed to agree on a common stance at a meeting in Brest this week.

Other than Denmark, North Korea has also announced that it would not participate in the Olympic Games because of the coronavirus pandemic and moves by hostile forces.

Moreover, Japan affirmed that it is not going to send a government delegation to the games but Japanese athletes will attend the February games as scheduled, according to government sources.

This comes in line with a U.S.-led diplomatic boycott of the sporting spectacle over China’s human rights record.
