Thousands of people took to the streets of Mexico to demand an end to the bloodshed in Gaza on the first anniversary of the war in Gaza. Protesters marched carrying banners and Palestinian flags, and urged Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to sever diplomatic and economic ties with Israel.

The Mexican newspaper El Excellór said that Mexico is one of the countries that requested to join the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel regarding its violation of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in 1948. Mexico's request to intervene was based on Article 63 of the Statute of the Court, which "gives other states the right to intervene for the purpose of making a statement on the interpretation of the Convention."

Mexico indicated its desire to "present its view on the interpretation of the provisions of the Convention relevant to the case."

The newspaper said that the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip are suffering from a catastrophic humanitarian situation, in light of the continued commission of the crime of genocide, and its reaching unprecedented levels of suffering, which highlights the urgent need for justice and the application of the rule of law, and urgent intervention to stop the crimes of the occupation and provide protection for our people.

This is not the first time that Mexico has spoken publicly about the siege imposed on Gaza, as its government has repeatedly denounced the Israeli attack on civilians in Gaza.

At least 41,788 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed, according to figures from the Ministry of Health of the Hamas government in Gaza, which the United Nations considers reliable.
