The Ugandan authorities announced that the death toll from the collapse of a garbage dump in the Kitizi area, north of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, has risen to 18 dead and 14 injured.
The American ABC network reported on Sunday that the country's president, Yoweri Museveni, ordered an investigation into the incident, denouncing allowing homes to be built and citizens to live in this dangerous area that is vulnerable to collapse.
Local media reported that the collapse of the garbage dump, which occurred after heavy rains, buried people, animals, and homes, and that these rains are also hampering search and rescue efforts at the present time.
The garbage dump is located on a steep slope in the poor part of the city.
