Pakistan’s Minister of Climate Change Sherry Rehman said at least 77 people were killed since mid-June due to heavy rains and floods caused in various parts of the country.

On Thursday, Dawn Newspaper quoted the minister as saying that many women and children are among the victims.

The catastrophic situation arose in Balochistan state, southwestern Pakistan, where rains and floods killed 39 and wounded 50 others.

The paper added that the percentage of rainfall in the Asian country has exceeded the average level since last June 14 by 87%, noting that this index in Balochistan and Sindh exceeded 274% and 261%, respectively.

Due to the continuous rains and floods, authorities in Balochistan announced a state of emergency in the capital of the region, the city of Quetta, which is still flooded with water in most of its neighborhoods.

On Wednesday, Pakistani President Arif Alvi expressed his regret to the families of the victims of the disaster in Quetta and ordered the provision of financial assistance to those affected by the heavy rains and floods.
