A deadly airstrike struck a military medical facility in Iraq’s Habbaniyah area on Tuesday, killing at least 20 people and injuring several others, in what officials described as a serious escalation targeting security institutions.

The strike reportedly hit the Habbaniyah military clinic and an adjacent engineering unit affiliated with the Ministry of Defense. Initial reports indicated that at least seven personnel from the ministry were among the dead, while rescue teams continue search and recovery operations at the site.

Iraq’s Ministry of Defense condemned the attack as a “blatant violation of international laws and norms,” warning that such actions could trigger further escalation. The ministry affirmed the right of Iraqi security forces and allied units to respond and defend themselves using available means.

Authorities have cordoned off the area as investigations continue to determine the circumstances and perpetrators behind the attack. Civil defense teams remain on-site, working to rescue victims from the rubble.

The incident marks the latest in a series of attacks targeting Iraqi security forces and affiliated groups, raising concerns over a widening cycle of violence in the region.
