The Czech Republic national football team secured a place in the World Cup qualification playoff final after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over the Republic of Ireland national football team, following a 2-2 draw after extra time.
Jan Kliment converted the decisive spot kick to seal the win, sending the Czechs into a निर्णायक clash with the Denmark national football team for a place at the tournament in June.
Goalkeeper Matěj Kovář played a crucial role in the shootout, saving two penalties to guide his team through.
“We didn’t start well but we handled it as a team and we’re moving on — that’s what matters most,” Kovář said. “We prepared for the penalty shootout with both goalkeeping coaches and it paid off.”
Ireland took the lead in the 19th minute through Troy Parrott, who converted a penalty after a VAR review ruled that Vladimír Darida had fouled Nathan Collins in the area.
The visitors doubled their advantage just four minutes later when Vladimír Coufal inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
The Czechs responded quickly, with Patrik Schick converting from the penalty spot in the 27th minute. They completed the comeback late in normal time when captain Ladislav Krejčí headed in an equaliser in the 86th minute.
Ireland had earlier come close to scoring when Collins struck the woodwork with a powerful effort in the opening stages, as the visitors applied early pressure.
“It’s just pain, we only feel pain,” said Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson. “When you go this far, it comes down to fine margins.”
Czech coach Miroslav Koubek, taking charge of the national team for the first time, saw his side struggle early before improving significantly in the second half.
In extra time, Kovář made key saves to keep his team in the match before Kliment, introduced late in the game, converted the decisive penalty.
The Czech Republic, aiming for their first World Cup appearance since 2006, will now host Denmark, who advanced with a 4-0 victory over North Macedonia national football team.
