Culture Min. UNESCO Speech: Promoting Culture of Tolerance, Confronting Fanaticism

Dr. Inas Abdel Dayem, Minister of Culture, delivered the speech of Egypt at the Forum of Culture Ministers, as part of the 40th session of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization -UNESCO.

The ceremony was attended by 120 Culture Ministers from all over the world, Ambassador Ehab Badawy, Ambassador of Egypt to France and the Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Dr. Heba Yousef, Head of the External Cultural Relations Sector.

Abdel Dayem started by conveying the Egyptian government's appreciation to UNESCO for organizing this forum.

She outlined some of the guidelines related to the cultural policies: giving equal opportunities among citizens, especially youth, achieving the principle of cultural justice as a pivotal way to build human and to develop society.

She added that culture is able to contribute to economic, social development, security and prosperity in cities and villages.

Furthermore, she pointed out that the Ministry of Culture is working hard within the framework of Egypt Vision- 2030 for sustainable development to achieve cultural justice.

It aims to deliver cultural service to all parts of the country, especially to the neediest areas through cultural convoys, including multiple artistic and cultural activities in addition to training workshops.

The minister added that the Egyptian government pays special attention to the border areas in several governorates to deliver cultural services to them, instilling the values of belonging in the youth of these areas by implementing cultural integration programs for the children of the governorates.

The minister explained that the Egyptian Ministry of Culture gives more attention to the people with special abilities.

It organizes a perse cultural program for them including the establishment of theatric Troup starring children with special abilities, the publication of a "Braille" magazine and building halls for the blind for music and arts. This contributed effectively in integrating them in various cultural activities.

The minister stressed that the strategy implemented by the Ministry focuses on strengthening human and institutional capacities to achieve creativity in Egypt, empowering women to achieve gender equality in the cultural sector, supporting urban transformation.

It also plays a great role in establishing local markets for creativity and cultural services, enhancing cultural persity, consolidating the role of culture in cities, praising pluralism and positive community participation, developing skills and encouraging creativity and innovation in order to build Egyptian people.

The strategy also include integrating culture into environmental and social development strategies, protecting and safeguarding cultural heritage through a special program with launching many small and micro projects for young people.

Furthermore, it confronts extremism and fanaticism, discovering and adopting new talents, establishing cultural centers targeting all age layers - starting from the age of six years old, inaugurating new branches of the Academy of Arts in several provinces, and making use of public areas to promote dialogue and social interaction.
