The series adaptation of the cult 1999 movie "Cruel Intentions" is officially going to Amazon‘s Prime Video.
The first season will consist of eight episodes and initially ordered at Amazon back in April, though at the time it was unclear if it would stream on Prime Video or Freevee, Amazon’s AVOD platform.
Amazon has also confirmed the cast members will include: Sarah Catherine Hook as Caroline, Zac Burgess as Lucien, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva as CeCe , Khobe Clarke as Scott, John Harlan Kim as Blaise, Brooke Lena Johnson as Beatrice, and Sean Patrick Thomas as Professor Chadwick.
Claire Forlani, Nikki Crawford, Isabella Tagliati, and Zeke Goodman will appear in recurring roles. Laura Benanti will also appear in the recurring guest star role of Claudia, Caroline’s mother. Jon Tenney will appear in a recurring guest star role as a U.S. Congressman Russell.
The series, which has been in development at Amazon Freevee since 2021, was picked up at Amazon in early April for eight episodes. It is scheduled to begin production this month in Toronto.
The TV adaptation is a long time coming for the 1999 cult classic. It was set at IMDB TV with Amazon Studios producing alongside Sony Pictures Television in 2021.
The updated take is inspired by the 1999 movie of the same name that was adopted from the novel “Dangerous Liaisons”.
It focuses on two ruthless step-siblings who will do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputations after a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Greek life hierarchy at an elite Washington, D.C. college. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do anything to preserve their power and reputations, even attempt to seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.
In 2016, NBC had attempted to develop a follow-up to the movie with one of the movie's original stars, Sarah Michelle Gellar, reprising her role as Kathryn Merteuil. It was ultimately not picked up.
Prior to that, Fox attempted to create a prequel series that was canceled before its debut, however, three episodes were developed into the direct-to-video movie “Cruel Intentions 2" in 2001. Another direct-to-video sequel, “Cruel Intentions 3,” was released in 2004.
The new version will be written and executive produced by Phoebe Fisher with Sara Goodman.
Neal H. Moritz of Original Film, who produced the 1999 movie, is executive producing alongside Pavun Shetty.
Exec producers also include Andrea Iervolino and Monica Bacardi of Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment and Bruce Mellon.
