Media reports have raised concerns about Cristiano Ronaldo’s fitness ahead of the 2026 World Cup after he sustained a muscle injury during Al Nassr FC’s 3-1 victory over Al Fayha FC in the Saudi Pro League.

According to British newspaper The Sun, the match featured an unusual moment from the Portugal captain, who missed a first-half penalty when the score was still level at 0-0.

In the closing stages, Ronaldo appeared visibly uncomfortable and requested to be substituted in the 80th minute due to apparent muscle pain.

Cameras later showed him sitting on the bench with an ice pack placed behind his knee, an early indication of a muscular issue that may require detailed medical examinations, especially with major international competitions approaching.

Al Nassr head coach Jorge Jesus confirmed after the match that the player had felt muscle fatigue. He added that the medical staff would conduct immediate tests to accurately assess his condition and determine the expected duration of any absence.

This marks the second time in recent days that Ronaldo has left the field before full time, having also exited early in a previous match against Al Najma SC, intensifying concerns about his physical condition amid a demanding schedule and advancing age.

Ronaldo is hoping to feature in the upcoming World Cup, which would represent his sixth appearance in the tournament, an unprecedented record in the competition’s history.

Portugal is set to compete in a group that includes Colombia and Uzbekistan, along with one of the playoff qualifiers from DR Congo, Jamaica, or New Caledonia.

Despite current concerns, Ronaldo continues to build on his historic achievements. He is approaching the milestone of 1,000 career goals, needing just 35 more to reach the landmark.

He has already scored 21 league goals this season, keeping him firmly in contention for the top scorer title.

Meanwhile, Al Nassr leads the Saudi Pro League standings, holding a two-point advantage over Al Ahli and a three-point lead over Al Hilal, underlining Ronaldo’s importance to the team’s title ambitions both as a scorer and as a leader on the pitch.
