Legendary Cristiano Ronaldo continued to make history in his football career by leading Portugal ahead of Hungary, scoring two goals in the first half of Tuesday’s match in the European qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With these two goals, Ronaldo became the all-time top scorer in World Cup qualifying history with 40 goals, surpassing Guatemalan Carlos Ruiz, who previously shared the record with 39 goals.

At 40 years old, the Portuguese captain continues to break records, bringing his total official career goals to 948, edging closer to the historic milestone of 1,000 official goals.

Ronaldo has also demonstrated his enduring dominance at an advanced age, having scored 91 goals for Portugal after turning 30, compared to 52 before that, bringing his total international tally to 143 goals in 225 matches—an unprecedented achievement in football history.

Portugal currently lead their group by five points with only three matches remaining. A victory over Hungary would secure their qualification, provided Armenia fails to win against Ireland in the same round.

Hungary sits second temporarily, one point ahead of Armenia and three points ahead of Ireland, who are in the playoff position, making the Hungary-Portugal match crucial for qualification hopes.

Portugal has shown remarkable consistency in recent matches, achieving five wins and one draw in its last six games across all competitions.

Their recent victory over Ireland ended a streak of matches in which they scored two or more goals, reflecting the team’s tactical maturity and ability to win under varying scenarios.
