COVID-19 Repercussions on Food Security in Africa

The COVID-19 crisis has uncovered the economic vulnerabilities of African countries and the weaknesses in their health and food systems.

Food and livestock traders suffered from an oversupply of goods as food prices skyrocketed due to border closures and job losses.

Supply chain problems have pushed GDP down to 7.8% for some economies. In Africa, the number of people at risk of extreme poverty increased to more than 40 million additional people and a reduction in energy access for 2020 was reported by 6%.
