The number of deaths in Europe surpassed two million cases, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the World Health Organization (WHO).

"A devastating milestone has passed as reported confirmed Covid-19 deaths from countries in the WHO European Region have exceeded more than 2 million people," the UN Health Agency said.

According to the UN health authority, 2,002,058 people have died from the Coronavirus out of the 218,225,294 detected in the 53-country bloc.

It is worthy to mention, infections and deaths linked to COVID-19 continued their decline worldwide, the Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced last month

“COVID-19 cases and deaths continue to decline, which is very good news. However, reduced testing in many countries makes us blind to patterns of transmission & evolution. When it comes to a deadly virus, ignorance is not bliss.”

Furthermore, he pointed out in his speech that the rates of vaccination against the virus worldwide reached 60 percent.

“Almost 60 percent of the world’s population has now completed a primary course of vaccination, but only 11 percent of the population of low-income countries. Closing this gap remains essential to ending the pandemic as a global health emergency.”

In addition, he announced that the new treatment method has been recommended by the organization for people who are in mild and moderate COVID-19 conditions, revealing: “On Friday, WHO recommended the antiviral combination nirmatrelvir and ritonavir, also known as Paxlovid, for patients with mild or moderate COVID-19 that are at high-risk of hospitalization. This treatment helps prevent hospitalizations and is easy to administer.”
