The global coronavirus number of infected people exceeded 10 million on Sunday, marking a major milestone in the spread of the respiratory disease which has killed nearly half a million people in seven months so far.

According to the World Health Organization, the figure is approximately double the number of severe influenza diseases reported annually.

The milestone comes when many hard-hit countries relax lockdowns while making substantial changes to work and social life that may continue for a year or more before there is a vaccine.

Some countries are experiencing a resurgence of infections, leading authorities to partially re-establish lockdowns, in what experts say could be a recurring pattern in the months ahead and into 2021.
