African countries are facing escalating economic challenges as climate change intensifies.

From deadly heatwaves and heavy rains to widespread flooding and prolonged droughts, extreme weather events are causing significant disruptions across the continent, with devastating consequences for local economies.

Reports from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change reveal that global warming is costing African nations nearly 5% of their annual GDP.

The World Meteorological Organization further indicates that many African governments are allocating up to 9% of their budgets to address extreme climate conditions, straining already limited resources.

The growing frequency and severity of these events are causing widespread damage, including crop failures, infrastructure destruction, and the displacement of millions of people.

Experts highlight that while Africa contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, it bears a disproportionate share of the consequences. International cooperation and support are deemed essential for helping African nations adapt to these challenges and mitigate their impacts.

Recent initiatives, such as those discussed during COP28, aim to address the funding shortfall and provide practical solutions for vulnerable nations.

These measures include enhancing climate resilience, supporting sustainable development, and implementing innovative strategies to minimize economic and social disruptions.

Africa remains one of the most climate-affected regions in the world, with 17 of the 20 countries most vulnerable to climate change located within the continent.

The increasing costs of addressing climate-related damages, coupled with economic losses in critical sectors, underscore the urgent need for global action.
