US protesters clashed with police, near the White House in Washington, after they took to the streets demanding racial equality and more democracy.

The protesters tried to bring down the statue of former US President Andrew Jackson but the police thwarted their attempts, Reuters reported.

Noteworthy, fierce protests have been raging in US since an unarmed black man, George Floyd, 46, died after a white officer knelt on his neck.

The man, allegedly tried to pass counterfeit bills at a corner eatery, was taken by ambulance from the scene of his arrest and declared dead the same night at a hospital.

Thousands of protesters have been arrested by US police since the protests erupted over killing the black man by a white policeman in Minneapolis.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called for an investigation into the killing of American citizen George Floyd.

“We call upon the US authorities to take serious measures to rectify the situation and to return to fulfillment of international obligations, to bring its national legislation into accordance with basic UN principles on the use of force and firearms by law enforcement officers, and, of course, to thoroughly investigate the murder of George Floyd,” the Ministry said in a statement.

The Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that this incident is not the first in a series of abuses and unjustified violence committed by the security services in the United States.
