China’s population fell for the fourth consecutive year in 2025, reinforcing concerns among demographers that the country’s long-term demographic decline is set to accelerate in the coming years.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China’s total population decreased by 339 million people in 2025, bringing the overall figure down to 1.405 billion. Officials said the scale of the decline was sharper than in 2024, highlighting a deepening trend driven by low birth rates and structural demographic pressures.
Experts have warned that continued population contraction could have far-reaching implications for China’s labor market, economic growth and social welfare systems, particularly as the population continues to age rapidly.
The figures underscore mounting challenges for China as policymakers seek to stabilize population growth amid shifting family patterns and a shrinking workforce.
