China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, stressed the need to respect Syria's sovereignty and called for an end to the cross-border aid delivery mechanism for Syria.

Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the UN, stressed the necessity to respect Syria's sovereignty, and call for an end to the cross-border aid delivery mechanism for Syria.

Commenting on the vote on draft resolutions on extending this mechanism yesterday, Jun said, "The Security Council must come up with a clear timetable for ending this mechanism as soon as possible, and we must respect Syria's sovereignty, and relief through Syria should become the main channel for humanitarian assistance," according to Xinhua News Agency.

He stressed that the cross-border aid delivery mechanism is a temporary arrangement based on the special situation in Syria, reiterating China's supportive position to provide humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people through the UN and the international community in accordance with the principles of humanity, neutrality, and impartiality.

Jun pointed out that his country provides various types of assistance to Syria.

It is noteworthy that the aforementioned mechanism was to transfer humanitarian aid to Syria through the Bab al-Hawa crossing on the border with Turkey, without coordination with the Syrian authorities. The mechanism expires on July 10.

Western countries have been calling for the mechanism to continue, while Russia has called for aid to be transferred to Syria through the territory controlled by the Syrian government.
