China will offer emergency humanitarian aid of 30 million yuan ($4.4 million) to earthquake-hit Syria, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning announced on Wednesday.

Mao said a cash amount of $2 million would be used for needed relief supplies, adding that China would speed up existing food aid projects.

In the same vein, China already committed to giving a first tranche of 40 million yuan in emergency aid to Turkey.

Meanwhile, the death toll of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria exceeded 9,000.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan affirmed that the 7.8- magnitude earthquake was the biggest disaster they had experienced in the last century.

During his speech, Erdoğan highlighted that search and rescue teams had been dispatched to the affected areas.

“We do not know how high the number of dead and injured will go. Our hope is to get through this disaster with the least loss,” he said.

“This is the biggest disaster we’ve experienced in the last century after the 1939 Erzincan earthquake,” he added, citing an incident in which more than 32,000 people were killed in eastern Turkey.
