Chimpanzee Shot Dead in Athens Zoo

The Athens Zoo announced that workers had to shoot and kill a male chimpanzee after he escaped to avoid endangering the lives of visitors.

On Sunday morning, the park management said in a statement that on Sunday morning, "park staff noticed a male chimpanzee escaping after a fight with other monkeys. The park's security protocol was activated immediately, police were reported, and visitors were isolated... as it was necessary to kill him after 20 minutes."

It explained in her statement that it was not possible to drug the animal or capture it.
