The Premier League has imposed a series of sanctions on Chelsea following an investigation into financial rule breaches that occurred during the ownership of former club owner Roman Abramovich.

According to reports by The Athletic, Chelsea have been handed a one-year transfer ban that will be suspended for two years.

During this probationary period, the club will still be able to register players unless further violations occur.

The Premier League also fined the club £10 million for breaching financial regulations and banned Chelsea from registering academy players for nine months.

The charges related to the first team stem from incomplete financial reporting and delayed payments dating back around a decade.

Investigators focused particularly on payments linked to the signings of Samuel Eto'o and Willian in 2013, as well as the transfer of Eden Hazard the year before.

In an official statement, Chelsea FC said it had treated the investigation with the utmost seriousness and fully cooperated with all relevant regulatory authorities from the outset.

“The club welcomes the Premier League’s recognition of its exceptional cooperation,” the statement read.

“Without the voluntary disclosures and self-reporting made by Chelsea, many of these historical breaches might never have come to the league’s attention.”

Chelsea also noted that the £10 million fine mirrors a sanction previously imposed by UEFA in 2023.

At the time, European football’s governing body stated that the club had proactively reported potential cases of incomplete financial reporting related to transactions between 2012 and 2019 during the previous ownership.

UEFA fined Chelsea €10 million, considering it a settlement of the matter.

The club added that the allegations concerning the academy are separate from those involving the first team and relate to breaches of youth development regulations between 2019 and 2022, before the club was acquired by Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly.
