Chelsea have officially announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new men’s team manager ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach will begin his role at Stamford Bridge on July 1 after signing a four-year contract with the Premier League club.

Chelsea described Alonso as one of the most respected figures in modern football, highlighting his coaching achievements in Germany, where he guided Bayer Leverkusen to the first Bundesliga title in the club’s history during the historic unbeaten 2023-24 campaign.

The London club said Alonso’s leadership qualities, tactical philosophy, experience at the highest level and strong character played a major role in the decision to appoint him as the man to lead Chelsea’s next era.

Speaking after the announcement, Alonso said he was proud to join one of the world’s biggest clubs.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” Alonso said.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”

The Spaniard also praised the quality within Chelsea’s squad and stressed his focus on building a winning culture at Stamford Bridge.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies,” he added.

Alonso enjoyed a glittering playing career, winning multiple major honours including the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Spain national football team, as well as league and European titles with Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
