On the auspicious occasion of ITEC Day 2024, the Indian Embassy in Egypt was abuzz with the spirit of friendship and cooperation that has long characterized the relations between India and Egypt. Ajit Gupte, the Ambassador of India to Egypt, extended a warm welcome to a distinguished gathering, highlighting the enduring bonds and shared aspirations of these two ancient civilizations.

The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Mohamed Aymen Ashur, Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research, as the Chief Guest, alongside an array of dignitaries and ITEC alumni. These alumni, with their deep-seated connections to India through the ITEC program, symbolize the vibrant people-to-people ties that have been a cornerstone of the India-Egypt relationship.

2023 was a landmark year that saw an unprecedented momentum in bilateral relations, marked by high-level exchanges including the visit of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to India and Prime Minister of India's state visit to Egypt. These interactions culminated in the elevation of India-Egypt relations to a 'Strategic Partnership,' showcasing a mutual commitment to deepen engagement across various domains.

The Ambassador underscored the burgeoning trade and investment ties, with bilateral trade touching US$ 7.5 billion and Indian companies investing over US$ 3.4 billion in Egypt. These economic engagements span diverse sectors, from chemicals to IT, and have recently ventured into sustainable energy projects like green hydrogen and green ammonia.

In the defense arena, collaborations have been equally robust, highlighted by the participation of a large Indian contingent in Egypt’s ‘Exercise Bright Star’ and the joint military exercise 'Cyclone-II'. Such interactions not only enhance military cooperation but also foster a deep understanding and respect between the two nations’ armed forces.

At the heart of the ITEC Day celebrations was the acknowledgment of the Indian Technical & Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program, a flagship initiative by the Government of India that has been instrumental in nurturing talent and building capacities across the Global South. With over two hundred thousand professionals benefiting from ITEC in its 59-year history, the program exemplifies India's commitment to fostering global partnerships for development.

Ambassador Gupte’s address highlighted the adaptability of the ITEC program, especially in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, through the introduction of online courses and the inclusion of contemporary subjects like artificial intelligence and cloud computing. This agility ensures that ITEC remains relevant and continues to meet the evolving needs of its global participants.

As the evening unfolded, the ITEC alumni shared their experiences and the impact of the program on their professional lives, embodying the program's success in building lasting bridges of friendship and cooperation.

The ITEC Day 2024 celebrations in Egypt were not just a reflection of the strong bilateral ties but also a testament to the spirit of South-South cooperation that India champions. As the event drew to a close, the attendees were left with a sense of camaraderie and a renewed commitment to furthering the partnership between India and Egypt, with cultural exchanges and Indian cuisine adding to the warmth of the occasion.

In his concluding remarks, Ambassador Gupte extended his gratitude to all the attendees, especially acknowledging Excellency Rania El Mashat for her presence, and wished everyone a delightful evening, underpinned by the rich cultural tapestry and shared heritage that India and Egypt proudly cherish.
