Carlos Alcaraz will miss the chance to defend his title at the French Open after confirming he will not compete due to a wrist injury.
The Spaniard picked up the issue during the opening round of the Barcelona Open earlier this month and was forced to withdraw. Further medical scans later revealed the injury was more serious than initially expected.
Alcaraz subsequently pulled out of the Madrid Open, and additional tests confirmed he will also miss the Italian Open, leaving him sidelined for Roland Garros.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Alcaraz said the decision was made as a precaution while monitoring his recovery.
He described the situation as a difficult moment but expressed confidence that he will return stronger.
The 22-year-old was set to enter the tournament as defending champion after his dramatic five-set victory over Jannik Sinner in last year’s final.
He had also been targeting a third title in Paris, having previously defeated Alexander Zverev to secure his first crown in 2024.
Alcaraz has recently lost the world number one ranking to Sinner following his defeat in the Monte Carlo Masters final. With Sinner continuing to compete, the gap at the top of the rankings could widen further.
The French Open is scheduled to begin on May 24 in Paris, with Alcaraz’s absence set to reshape the competition for this year’s title.
