Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly expressed deep concern on Saturday about the rising violence between Lebanon and Israel, warning that approximately 45,000 Canadians are currently in Lebanon.
This follows months of previous warnings from the Canadian government, cautioning citizens that Ottawa may not be able to evacuate them if the situation deteriorates further.
In her statement, Joly said, “We are extremely worried about what’s happening in Lebanon, and of course, in the broader Middle East region.”
The Canadian government has been urging citizens to leave Lebanon for months but has not provided a clear estimate of how many people the advisory applies to. Joly indicated today that around 45,000 Canadians are believed to be present in Lebanon.
She also expressed serious concern over the escalating violence in Lebanon, including deadly attacks widely attributed to Israel. These incidents, involving explosive devices and wireless communication jammers, have killed dozens and injured hundreds, including civilians.
