Cairo Univ. Team Wins Bronze Medal in (iGEM) Competition

Cairo University President, Dr. Mohamed Osman El-Khosht, announced that a team of students from Faculty of Science won the bronze medal in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, held from October 31 to November 4 in Boston, USA.

This competition focused on synthetic biology, a field that integrates biology with its various branches with engineering and computer science.

Dr. El-Khosht praised the students’ project that helps in finding a solution to the problem of water shortage with unconventional ideas; the team developed a method to desalinate water through using safe microorganisms which are alternative to expensive desalination methods that consume high energy and are harmful to the environment.

The university president congratulated “Tasneem Mohammed, Aisha Hisham, Mariam Mohamed, Menna Allah Mahmoud, Lina Hamza, Youssef Mahmoud, Farouk Adel, Tarek Galal” for winning the bronze medal, stressing the ability of Cairo University students to participate in international and local competitions in science and innovation and win prizes.

El-Khosht said that he agreed to support the team with 350 thousand Egyptian pounds to travel and participate in the competition and present their project.

El-Khosht added that the university encourages its students to participate in the international competitions, stressing his support for the students’ projects that aim at finding innovative solutions to national issues in order to implement the strategy of sustainable development.

On his part, Dr. Abdul Hamid El-Menawi, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, noted that iGEM competition is one of the largest competitions globally in the field of genetic engineering and synthetic biology, pointing out that the Faculty of Science team consists of 8 students from the departments of biology, biotechnology , engineering , Computer Science.
