Palestinian factions have begun meetings in Cairo with Egyptian mediators to discuss the formation of a technocratic Palestinian committee tasked with administering the Gaza Strip, as part of preparations to move into the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, a Palestinian source said on Wednesday.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said consultations with Egyptian officials will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, focusing on reaching consensus over the committee’s composition, mandate, and institutional reference. The proposed body is expected to include around 15 figures from Gaza with administrative and technical expertise.
According to the source, the committee would oversee day-to-day governance in Gaza and help create conditions for launching reconstruction efforts. Several names are currently under discussion, some of which are reportedly subject to review by Israel and the United States before final approval. An official announcement of the committee’s members is expected later this week or early next week.
A delegation from Hamas, led by Khalil Al-Hayya, arrived in Cairo on Tuesday evening to hold talks with Egyptian officials. In a statement, Hamas said the discussions focus on completing the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, accelerating the transition to its second phase, forming an independent administrative committee for Gaza, and ensuring the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Strip.
