Congolese fan Michel Koka has received official recognition during the Africa Cup of Nations after capturing widespread attention for his striking tribute to the late national leader Patrice Lumumba.
Koka became one of the most memorable figures of the tournament in Morocco, standing out in the stands by portraying Lumumba with remarkable resemblance.
Remaining motionless throughout DR Congo’s matches and maintaining the same pose, he quickly earned the nickname “the statue fan,” drawing admiration from fans, officials, and media alike.
His growing popularity, combined with the positive spotlight he brought to his national team and the renewed interest in the story of Lumumba’s struggle, prompted the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to honor him.
In recognition of his distinctive presence and dignified representation of the country, Koka was awarded a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The tribute came despite DR Congo’s exit from the tournament in the round of 16, following a dramatic 1-0 defeat to Algeria, decided in the final moments of the second period of extra time.
In another gesture of appreciation, the tournament’s organizing committee extended an official invitation to Koka to attend the Africa Cup of Nations final, scheduled to take place on January 18.
Speaking about his experience, Koka described the tournament as unforgettable, saying that the attention he received from fans and media was a source of pride for his country.
He added that the moment reflected a positive image of Congo’s history and helped bring greater awareness to its national heritage.
