The top general in Sudan announced on Monday that the military will leave talks intended to end the continuing political crisis following a coup last year and be replaced by representatives of civil society.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan also pledged to dismiss the sovereign council he chairs after a new transitional government is established in televised remarks broadcast on Sudan's official television. Since the military overthrew the government in a coup last year, the council has presided over the nation.

Since the coup, the eight-nation East African regional Intergovernmental Authority in Development group, the African Union, and the UN political mission in Sudan have been attempting to mediate a way out of the political impasse. However, discussions have not yet produced any results.

People who support democracy have urged the military to promptly pass over power to a civilian government and have stated repeatedly that they will not engage in negotiations with them.

No dates or replacements for the military at the negotiating table were mentioned by Burhan.

He declared that the army and the potent paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces would be placed under a new governing body that would be in charge of the nation's defence and security following the dissolution of the ruling council.

After a brief period of democracy following the 30-year dictatorship of former president Omar al-Bashir, Sudan has descended into chaos as a result of the military coup. In April 2019, the military overthrew Bashir and the government he led with support from the Islamists.
