The U.S. Central Command announced the postponement of the "Bright Star" maneuvers, which were to be hosted by the Egyptian armed forces next September because of the effects of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
“BRIGHT STAR, a joint, multinational exercise hosted by the Egyptian Armed Forces has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the U.S. CENTCOM announced in a statement on Friday.
The statement added that “Originally scheduled for September 2020, the exercise is rescheduled for September 2021.”
At the same time, the USCENTCOM stressed that it "looks forward to continuing this decades-long training relationship and resume the opportunity to train alongside our valued Egyptian partners and other nations.”
The Bright Star is held in Egypt periodically between more than one country, where the maneuvers began for the first time in October 1980 after the signing of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel in 1979. Then, it was resumed in 1981. Thus, it is held in the autumn every two years.
On September 22, 2018, Egypt and the U.S. armed forces concluded the joint military exercises “Bright Star 2018,” which were held in Mohamed Naguib military base from 8 to 20 September.
The “Bright Star 2018” exercises involved several military activities, joint training, decision-making skills as well as a number of scenarios for handling urgent and emergency circumstances on the ground.
