On Monday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva recalled his country's ambassador to Israel for talks, in addition to firing the Israeli ambassador to Brazil.
According to sources in Brazil's foreign ministry, there is a diplomatic dispute between the two countries over the Brazilian President's comments against Israel.
The Brazilian ambassador was previously been summoned by the Israeli Foreign Minister after the comments of Lula.
President Lula da Silva said during a press conference at the African Summit on Sunday: “What’s happening in the Gaza Strip isn’t a war, it’s a genocide,” adding: “It’s not a war of soldiers against soldiers. It’s a war between a highly prepared army and women and children.”
He also compared what is happening by the Israelis against the Palestinians like the Holocaust, in addition to accusing the Israelis of genocide against the Palestinians.
“What’s happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people hasn’t happened at any other moment in history,” he continued. “Actually, it has happened: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews.”
Brazil is not the first Latin American state to have a dramatic diplomatic dispute with Israel.
Previously, Bolivia and Belize cut all ties with Israel, and Chile and Honduras recalled their ambassadors.
Moreover, Colombia recalled its ambassador citing what President Petro called the “massacre of Palestinian people.”
